Curriculum/Ranks

We have recognized that there are many systems and styles of Martial Arts, and even within the “same style” there may/will be discrepancies in the methods, forms, techniques, postures, and different practices based on the system’s emphasis or goal. It is definitely of interest to learn all one can about other “styles” or derivation of a style as a dedicated full-time martial arts practitioner or a scholar of martial arts, however, the curriculum introduced on this website is to provide a roadmap to gain a firm foundation for the Ng Ga Kuen system as presented to Sifu Seming Ma from his grandfather, GM Ark Yuey Wong. Although skills and techniques are not only important to develop a practitioner from any style, but it is also important, if not more important to provide and emphasize the chronological order of developing the skills and methods within a system like in the NGK system as presented on this website. It is certainly amendable and with great appreciation for the abundance of possibilities of learning from different teachers/Sifus/Masters of the Ng Ga Kuen system. However, what you will encounter through the training, presented here, are what is summarized in each of the levels (Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced) as you progress through your journey of the Ng Ga Kuen Style.

The Ng Ga Kuen Kung Fu curriculum is separated into various levels, but the knowledge acquired should be in a fairly progressive and chronological order from beginners, to intermediate, then to advanced training. The knowledge acquired is much like learning a language like English or Spanish. In the same way as a language is learned, so is the NGK style of Kung Fu is learned. Both starts with the basics and will use those basics to build upon to learn the mechanics and the creativeness in order to master oneself within the specific field of concentration, in this case Ng Ga Kuen Kung Fu.

A student’s general learning progression in Ng Ga Kuen Kung Fu can be found in many other styles of martial arts. In the traditional Chinese Martial Arts system, there are basically three student levels, which are described below, however, in recent times, the system has incorporated modern categories to integrate the traditional student labels to the modern labels using color sashes / belts and levels within each color for ranking purposes (see chart below).

Beginner Student Training: Bring awareness regarding the code of moral ethics (morality of deed and morality of the mind – Wude) through the physical, mental, and family aspects of Kung Fu to the student. Refine and instill the martial virtues to the students that has the willpower to start and complete their journey in the martial art. The emphasis of importance for each training method is provided from ascending order, where the “Foundation/Fundamental Methods” are emphasized most, while the “Stretching” methods are emphasized least (although very important, if not for good health and preventing injury) in the Ng Ga Kuen System during class time.

Intermediate and Advanced Student Training: Although, there are basically three student levels, we have combined the curriculum for both the Intermediate and Advanced students together for the purpose of training. For these students, the journey toward the code of moral ethics (morality of deed and morality of the mind – Wude) through the mental, physical, emotional, and family aspects of Kung Fu have just begun. Continuing and not losing all the previous training, refinement of the martial virtues for each student will be different and the goal is to provide a foundation for leadership, initiative, creativeness, and mentorship for one’s future journey, not only in Kung Fu, but also in life’s journey toward “Self-Mastery”.
